Students in this small Italian town decided to focus their campaign on the safety of cyclists, and worked hard to spread this important message to their schoolmates and to the community as a whole.
The ideas
For the students, the most important issue in their town is the lack of safety for cyclists, because there are neither cycle paths, nor bike-friendly roads.
The students also held a debate to discuss more general aspects of road safety and underlined drivers’ responsibility, especially when it comes to risky behavior such as driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The debate also highlighted the students’ concerns regarding the importance of respecting speed limits, and the correct use of helmets and other equipment. The students also raised other issues that contribute to causing road accidents, such as the poor condition of the roads and of vehicles.
The initiatives
The students developed a campaign to raise awareness of crucial road safety issues. The first to be convinced were their schoolmates. Participating students created and curated a poster exhibition in the school hall. The posters included various vital road safety messages, such as wear a helmet, don’t drink and drive, and respect the speed limits.
The students also took the initiative to spread their message to the local community. They created a blog specifically for the project, to which they added basic road safety advice and recommendations. Each participating student wrote an article – the majority of which covered safety for cyclists – for publication in local newspapers.
